Match Trivia
Until Cunningham headed the first goal – that takes us half an hour into the game – Heart of Midlothian were every whit as good as Rangers in the holiday League match at Tynecastle. If Morton often sparked on the Rangers left, Birrell saw to it that he never got to close quarters with Kane. Then came Cunningham’s goal, led up to by fine work by Low. This seemed to knock the heart out of the Hearts. Four minutes later they were down and out – a long drive by Cunningham found its way straight into the roof of the net. Andrew nearly collected a third point at the start of the second half, the ball rebounding off the crossbar. The Tynecastle forwards came away in fine style at times, but never, well, hardly ever, shot. One from Preston went narrowly past, and another by Sinclair was ‘cornered’ by Robb. There was far more snap in the Rangers’ attack. With twenty minutes gone Cairns ‘headed’ a third goal, and near to the finish a lovely centre by Alan Morton went home off Bowie’s top-knot. Heart of Midlothian were well beaten. The half-backs tired in the chase after the strong-going Ibrox forwards, and their front line made a hash of things at close quarters. Dixon put in a grand afternoon’s work. Walls, Cunningham and Morton were best of the others. Birrell was outstanding in the Tynecastle defence. The sturdy little ‘Fifer’ got a nasty knock and was off at the time the fourth goal was scored. Murphy and Sinclair were the pick of the Edinburgh forwards, although the wing man was obviously not feeling very fit latterly
