Rangers signed George back in 1963, a then Scottish transfer record fee of £26,500 securing his services from St.Mirren.
He had played well for Saints against Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final that previous season despite finishing with a runners up medal.
George’s Rangers debut came on March 9th when Rangers defeated Dunfermline Athletic 2-1 at Ibrox. 11 days later he found the net for the first time, a Scottish Cup goal in the 7-2 rout of East Stirling.
George could play at wing-half or inside forward but it was as a striker along side Jim Forrest that ‘Dandy’ was arguably at his brilliant best. In the two and a half seasons leading up to the Scottish Cup defeat by Berwick in 1967, McLean and Forrest had scored 170 goals in 193 appearances between them but yet they still paid the price for that shock defeat.
By April 1967 George had been sold to Dundee with Andy Penman making the opposite move to Glasgow.
In all, George scored 82 times in 116 appearances for the Club whilst winning 1 League Championship and 2 Scottish Cups. He was also capped once by Scotland.
