Player Profile - George Roy McLean
Not to be confused with George 'Dandy' McLean who signed for Rangers slightly later, inside forward McLean joined the Club in April 1959 and made 8 appearances during his time at Ibrox.
His debut came at Stirling Albion on 19th August 1959 on the opening day of the League campaign as Rangers won 3-2 with goals from Jimmy Millar (2) and Davie Wilson. George's only other appearance of that 1959/60 season came on 27th April 1960 as Clyde gave the visitors a torrid afternoon at Shawfield racing into a four goal lead (Brand reducing the deficit with a penalty kick).
The League Championship returned to Ibrox the following season and McLean would start 6 of the 34 matches, the majority of which came during the final 10 games of the campaign. His first goals came on 8th March 1961 when he netted a double in a 3-0 win over Hearts at Ibrox. He then gained some revenge against Clyde, scoring a later winner to secure a 2-1 home win.
George's final appearance for Rangers came in a heavy defeat at Aberdeen.
McLean signed for Norwich City on 22nd March 1962 but did not make a single first team appearance. Six months later he transferred to Grimsby Town scoring 41 goals in 91 league appearances for the Mariners.
Having agreed to join Exeter City, George made a strong start to his career in southwest England but soon decided he wished to return north. He eventually signed for Workington and also turned out for their Cumbrian neighbours, Barrow.
George died on 29th June 2019, aged 81.
