Match Trivia
The prospective English League champions appeared at Ibrox Park yesterday afternoon. The Rangers were without Haddow and Law, while Sunderland had to play without John Auld, who got a rib broken in the League game against Stoke. The attendance would be quite up to 6000. The Rangers had to play against a stiff breeze in the first half, but they appeared quite able to the task of holding their own. Sunderland got a fine reception, Donald Gow the ex-Ranger, being specially welcomed. Drummond was kicking well at back, and McKenzie was doing splendidly, when called upon to exert himself. The visitors forwards and especially Scott, Miller and Campbell, were attacking in the most determined manner, but they found in the opening halfbacks, foemen worthy of their steel. Mitchell was doing well at halfback, and was ably backed up by McCreadie and Marshall. The Rangers front line frequently beat up in fine style aginst the wind, McPherson, Kerr and Watt being most prominent. The visitors however were having the best of matters and Donald Gow was kicking grandly for Sunderland. With a bit of luck Sunderland should have scored. Two corners fell to their lot, but the ground team men cleared, McKenzie was cheered for clever saving. The home team were principally engaged in defensive work, Miller, Campbell and Hannah had grand shots, but neither took effect. Play continued to be stubbornly fought out, the Wearside men renewing their endeavours as halftime was approaching. Score they could not, owing to the grand goalkeeping of McKenzie. At half time the score was Rangers 0 Sunderland 0. With the wind to assist them in the second half, the Rangers early put on the pressure. Their attack was quite as spirited as their opponenets in the proceeding half, and they maintained it to the same extent. Their passing forward was quite as smart, and all round the entire team were subbing it in hard. Sunderland right wing pair were bringing the ball up finely, but Dunbar and Drummond were able for them when it came to the pinch. From one of Sunderlands periodical breakaway, J Hannah scored. Prior to this the Rangers had a goal disallowed. A hard game ended Sunderland 1 goal: Rangers 0 goals. The visitors were the best English team seen in Glasgow this season
