Match Trivia
Umemployed Relief Fund Cup. When Carl Hansen made his first appearance in Scotland in a Light Blue jersey in an Alliance match, my colleague ‘Hercules’ went into raptures over him. He described the Dane as unorthodox and daring; he declared that there was no rule of thumb about his movements. According to friend ‘Hercules’, Carl was a second Andy Wilson that afternoon. As the match referred to was a minor one, at the back of my head I had the feeling – I was afraid, rather – that the writer was overstepping the mark when he suggested that Hansen was worthy a trial in the Rangers League eleven. I think differently this morning. After seeing the clean-cut little Danish product in yesterday’s Unemployed match, my notion is that the League champions need not be afraid to risk him in any game. At Hampden, yesterday, Carl was as nimble as a kitten; his side slips off a ‘wee toe’, so to speak, were masterpiece; he got balls with his head which a man six inches taller might not have attempted to get at; he shot like, well – he scored all three Rangers’ goal. He was brave, in addition. Hansen has a fault, but not a terribly bad, or, in these post-war days, a common one – he is too fond of work. He did a lot of running about which was useless, but he’ll get over that once he gains experience. After this eulogy of the little Great Dane, I have not much space left for the match at Hampden. Yet it was a game worth seeing. While Rangers were the better, the more methodical and more confident side, young QP made a stubborn stand. Which say much for them, for they got a rank bad start. Very early Sneddon handles – why, I could not make out and the Dane was given a gilt-edged opportunity. Surgener was helpless, as Carl flashed the ball into the net. QP bucked up following this reverse, and before the quarter was clocked, they were level. A corner from Craig found the Ibrox rear at fault, and Fyfe chipped in to beat Robb. Five minutes later a perfect cross from Archibald was trapped by Hansen on the run; in a jiffy he bashed it home with his deadly left. This was the ‘best goal’ I have seen for a long time. Before we had ceased taking of the Dane’s second success, I maught say, he completed his ‘hat trick’. From 25 yards out he let go like lightning – this time with his right. Surgener got down to the ball but could not stop its progress. A couple of goal down at the turn-over, QP fought a good fight in the second half. Rangers seemed playing well within themselves, but they lost a goal just the same. Following ‘a corner’ Grove headed the ball nicely out of Robb’s reach
