Rangers just managed to scrape through in their encounter with Morton at Greenock. In all fairness, it must be admitted that the Cappielow team were most unlucky to lose both points in a game in which they had as big a share as their opponents. McNab got Morton’s only goal after twenty minutes, McGregor gave him an opportunity, and after running along the wing, McNab cut in, and a hand, oblique shot found the net. Rangers equalised a few minutes before the interval through Cunningham, who had to pilot his way through a bunch of Greenock men. The score stood level at the interval, and ten minutes after resuming Henderson got the winning goal. Both teams had a goal disallowed. French headed through a cross from McMinn, who was penalised for paying too much attention to the goalkeeper. McDiarmid also sent one home after a brilliant run by Henderson, but, after consulting the linesman, the referee gave an offside decision. Robb won golden honours for his clever saving, and, indeed, it may be claimed that he more than anyone else prevented Morton from squaring matters. The ground was heavy, but it was, nevertheless, a rousing game, and the largest crowd of the season had plenty to enthuse over. The Rangers have no need to worry about the centre forward position so long as Henderson plays as he did yesterday. It was a masterly effort of his which sealed Morton’s fate. Archibald and Cunningham were a useful pair, but the first-named rather spoiled his good work on several occasions with weak finishing. Alan Morton was badly missed on the extreme left, McDiarmid failing to male any headway against McIntyre. Both Rangers backs played well. Manderson being one too many for McMinn. Morton gave their best display after Rangers scored their second goal. Morton’s centre was the one-man Rangers set themselves to watch with particular zeal, yet he was a constant source of danger. Brown’s absence from the Morton’s front rank was keenly felt, Gourlay being hardly up to the standard. This is the Greenock team’s first home defeat
