Match Trivia
Davie Mitchell Benefit Match, On Ibrox Park last night, before about 4000 spectators, these teams met in a friendly match for the benefit of Davie Mitchell, the old rangers halfback, who has now retired from the game. As will be seen from the listed teams, neither side was at full strength, but the sides were very strong, and gave a splendid exposition of the game. Right from the start play ruled fast and exciting, the Celts new front line showing plenty of dash and resource, so that Rangers defence was soon tested. A smart rally by the home front line opened the scoring, Tutty getting through after Donnelly had saved a difficult shot from Hamilton. For a time the Rangers had rather the better of the exchanges, but the splendid judgment of Campbell, McMahon and Divers saved the situation, and the equaliser shortly cam, McMahon giving the finishing touch. Halftime result – Rangers 1 goal: Celtic 1 goal. Play in the second half continued fast, both teams playing a neat close passing game, and displaying to advantage the finer points. Rangers were much more dangerous at goal, and Donnelly had some fine saves to his credit. Campbell and McMahon had a pretty break away, and Dickie had to throw himself out to clear. A Smith had not been getting much to do this half, but getting well away he centred, and Cameron put the ball into the net. Shortly after an infringement by Davidson, Rangers secured a penalty, from which Robertson scored. Result – Rangers 3 goals: Celtic 1
