Match Trivia

The famous Glasgow Rangers, the winners of the Scottish and Glasgow Cups, visited Perry Barr to play the Aston Villa. The visitors were strongly represented, there being no fewer than eight international players in their team, whilst Athersmith was the absentees from the Villa. The contest considering the scorching sun under which it was played, was a remarkably good one, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the 5,000 spectators who witnessed it. The Villa won by 3 goals to 1, but the play was very even, and the Rangers failed by reason of their bad shooting, this fault being especially noticeable in the second half. The Villa on the contrary, played extremely well in front of goal, and there was a marked improvement in the shooting all round. The Villa won the toss, and played downhill with the sun behind them. Gray started the ball, and the Rangers went straight away for the Villa goal. Barker centred, but Steel shot outside. Two more attacks gained corner kicks, but the visitors were unable to improve upon them. Some pretty tackling and dribbling by Cowan changed the scene of play, but Smith the Rangers back, put an end to the attack. Another attempt resulted in an unsuccessful corner kick. After the Rangers had paid a visit to the Villa goal, and Dunning had saved well, the local forwards combining pretty, made a strong attack, and Reynolds dropped the ball beautifully into goal, but Haddow easily cleared. Some capital play followed, and then Smith was cheered for a brilliant run. Dodging two of his opponents he dropped the ball in front of goal, and Brown who was lying handy, sent in a terrific shot. Haddow got to the ball, but the speed at which it came to hand prevented him from holding it, and it rolled across the line, the first goal coming to the Villa after twenty minutes play. Nettled by this reverse the Rangers strove desperately had to equalise, but the Villa defenders were ready and repeatedly drove them out. The home forwards, too were not idle, and after a capital run Chatt let fly at the visitors goal, but the ball struck Drummond and cannoned out. The Corner was abortive. Both teams were playing fine football, the passing and dribbling being a treat to witness. The Villa however if anything had the greater share of the attack, and at length after some beautiful passing Chatt shot a second point. The Rangers then forced Dunning to save, but the next minute Devey ran the ball down, gained a corner off Smith, and was enabled to head the ball through at the second attempt. No further goals were scored, the Villa leading at the interval by 3 to 0. At the commencement of the second half the Rangers showed some very fine lay, and were continually hovering round the Villa goal, but their shooting was not nearly so good as might have been expected from a team with such a reputation, After having had distinctly the best of the game for the first quarter of an hour the Rangers were compelled to defend, and a particularly fine attempt to score was made by Devey, Haddow saving with great difficulty. A moment later Chatt, when going for goal, was tripped u, and the referee awarded a penalty kick to the evident annoyance of the visitors, whose goalkeeper came out and refused to try to stop the shot. Reynolds thereupon kicked the ball out. Shortly afterwards the Rangers forced a corner kick, which was well placed and Dunning had a couple of shots to save, and saved them well. After trying very hard, the Rangers at length scored. Blyth dropping the ball into goal, and several of the visitors rushing Dunning through. This was the last goal obtained during the match, which ended in a victory for the Aston Villa by 3 goals to 1.
