Match Trivia

One of the best games ever witnessed on the Middlesbrough Ground was that played on Saturday with the famous Glasgow Rangers, who came from Newcastle with honours thick upon them. Some 4,000 spectators lined the ropes and watched the game with mist intense interest, the issue being most keenly contested from first to last. In the end Middlesbrough found themselves beaten by a goal, though it was the general opinion of the spectators that the point should not have been allowed, the player being offside at the time the ball was put through. Middlesbrough kicked off, and had decidedly the best of the pay for sometime. When right in the Rangers goal, Allen headed just over the crossbar. Walker cleared an attack by the Scotchmen, and Allen got well away before he was pulled up, when McPherson put behind. Middlesbrough again got up, and McCulloch had to concede a corner. Nothing came of the advantage, and Marshall after a fine run down the right, shot wide of Mackay’s goal. Allen shot again, when Middlesbrough got up, but McKenzie had little difficulty in clearing, and Marshall put behind when he had a fir chance. Then the home forwards put in a bit of fine play, but Copeland shot wide, and though some exciting lay was witnessed shortly afterwards in the Rangers goal, the danger was removed, and Kerr had a clever run, which however was unproductive. Some close play now took place in Mackay’s goal, where Marshall headed close in. The custodian saved smartly, and a goal kick transferred the play to midfield, whence Copeland carried it well into McKenzie’s quarters. The ball went into bye, and McManus was next called upon, responding vigorously. Hislop shot and Mackay fisted out, but Marshall returned, and a corner was conceded by McManus, McCreadie put in wide, and Watson and Lendess followed with a quick run up the left, Wilson received, but shot erratically, and the chance was spoiled. Hands off Crone looked like giving the Rangers a chance, but the ball was put behind. The homesters now adopted a decidedly aggressive attitude, and some exciting play occurred close to McKenzie’s sticks, but the best efforts of the forwards only resulted in a bye, and after the Scotchmen had broken away and put behind the whistle piped halftime. Middlesbrough 0: Rangers 0. When the ball was restarted a foul was given against Bach, but the Rangers did nothing with the free kick, and Allen got away on the right, when Copeland received, but let his opponents get in. Now a foul was given in favour of Middlesbrough, but the ball was put behind. Allen and Copeland now came up with a pretty run, but at the critical moment Gow relieved, and a rapid run up the visitors left resulted in Hislop scoring the first goal for the visitors. The kick off was followed by a rush on McKenzie’s goal, where a corner was conceded, Watson who took the kick, sent behind, and then the home goal was the scene of play, Crone clearing when the ball was returned into bye. A free kick now fell to the Rangers in dangerous proximity to the home goal, but though the citadel seemed in imminent danger, a stout defence was offered, and Gow ultimately sent the ball high over. Scotland had somewhat the best of a fast game after this, and McCreadie shot in very smartly, but Mackay saved easily, and a goal kick followed put the ball into midfield. Again coming to the foot H McCreadie shot very prettily and just missed by a foot, Marshall repeating the same feat. Then Copeland got away down the centre, and hands were given off Gow, Walker gave to Wilson, who shot wide. A fierce attack on McKenzie’s goal now followed, and Allen and Copeland both shot. Both were repulsed, and when the visitors got up Hislop’s effort was checked by Stevenson, who cleared timorously. Middlesbrough then had another look in, but Walker shot wide. Wilson and Allen now put in some pretty work, but were unsuccessful in their endeavours to overcome the defence of the Rangers, and shortly the visitors were pressing, and forced a corner. This remained unconverted, through the Rangers to force the play. The homesters however once or twice dashed away in brilliant fashion, and at length conceded a corner. The ball had scarcely been played when the whistle called time, and the game ended – Glasgow Rangers 1 goal: Middlesbrough 0
