Match Trivia

Played on the ground of the Rangers, Ibrox Park and ended in their favour by tree goals to one. Notwithstanding the unfavourable weather, about 1000 spectators were present, and watched the play with much interest. The strangers had by fully the best of the play during the earlier stages of the contest, and after a smart run by the bulk of their forwards a scrimmage was formed near the Rangers goal, and after a hard tussle the ball was forced through. The teams then faced up in the centre, and from the start by the Rangers some smart work was done on the slippery ground, and once or twice in a few minutes the Kilmarnock backs and goalkeeper had to show that they knew their work pretty well. The Rangers however, were slack at goal up to this point, and allowed several good chances to pass. The home team, however eventually made matters sure after a fine bit of passing by Wyllie and McCreadie the latter sending the ball past McGroy. Some even play followed, and at halftime the game was even each side scored a goal. In the second round the Rangers made an early attack on the Kilmarnock goal, and in a scrimmage a few yards of, the ball hit the goal-bar and went over the lines. The play after this was of a give-and-take order, each side being in turn attacked but the ground was on slippery side and was almost impossible for the forwards to play to each other with any degree of accuracy. Getting the ball well up on their own lines, from which Hunter and his halfback did some clever tackling in removing Hislop and McCreadie from the leather. Cameron made a fine run and got up to the goalkeeper before he was challenged. Reid however waited patiently, and caught the ball in his hands at the proper moment, and sent it down field. As the hour for stopping was getting near the home team warmed up considerably, and a sharp piece of play, more by long kicking and following up than dribbling ended in the Rangers scoring a second goal – the bal being put through by McPherson. This was now two to one in favour of the home eleven. And the Kilmarnock men had to face up and start afresh from the centre of the field. They looked dangerous for a few minutes, but good back play by Gow and Marshall put the ball away, and the Rangers forwards getting possession a second goal was cleverly scored out of a hard scrimmage in front. The whistle eventually sounded, leaving the Rangers the winners of a very good game by three goals to one
