Match Trivia
This undecided tie in the Glasgow Challenge Cup competition came off at the ground of the Rangers, Ibrox Park, in presence of an immense concourse of spectators, estimated at from 12,000 to 13,000, and again ended in a draw, with one goal each. In consequence of the rain of the previous day the ground was heavy for a good dribbling, but both teams kept their feet remarkably well, and although the contest was scarcely so exciting as that on the Volunteers ground, the game was of a very good one. The Rangers held out much better at the close of the contest than they did a fortnight ago, and it must be admitted that while they had more of the play against than their opponents, the match on the whole was a very even one, and Sellars certainly strengthen the back division by his fine play. Johnstone kicked off for the 3rd L.R.V. against the wind, and after a few passes between the forwards not very far away from midfield, the Rangers got hold of the leather, and from a neat run by Wyllie the ball was well middled, but it was cleared away by the right back of the 3rd L.R.V. who however sent the leather over his own lines. This gave the Rangers a corner flag kick, and in the scrimmage the ball went over the bar. After the kick out the 3rd L.R.V. forwards including Thomson and Burke, made a fast run down on the Rangers goal, and a piece of handling by one of the Rangers backs gave the Volunteers a free kick, which was so well followed up that the goalkeeper had barely time to clear the ball away with his hands before a crowd of the ‘Warriors’ were almost below the bar. Gow however made a further clearance, and then a clever run was noticed between McPherson and Hislop, the latter hitting the ball against the 3rd L.R.V. right goalpost. As the ball went over the goal line a good chance was lost. The keeper had no sooner kicked out in front, however than the leather was returned, and Wyllie had a hard shot that went clean through the goal; but he was declared off-side. The ball was kicked off again, and this time the Volunteers responded to the voice of their captain, and Johnstone and Thomson playing up well to each other brought the whole crowd of the Rangers backs in front of their fortress, and it was saved by hard play. After this the Volunteers again and again attacked the Rangers goal, and had hard lines in not forcing the ball through. At length the Rangers raised the siege, and a sturdy piece of hard play by the bulk of the forwards, led by Kerr, ended in the Rangers starting the scoring by making a neat goal from the foot of McPherson. The keeper leaped up to save the ball from going over his head, but it came very fast and went spinning through. The teams then opposed each afresh in midfield, and after some hard scrimmaging in the centre, the 3rd L.R.V. attacked the Rangers goal, and it had several narrow shaves. At one time, after a ‘foul’ the ball bobbed about in dangerous proximity to the goal, but Reid leaped up and fisted it away twice very smartly. Just before the start in the second round rain began to fall, but it was only a shower, and although the atmosphere was thick and cloudy it held off till the contest closed. The Volunteers had now the wind in their favour, and it was considered a pretty safe thing for them to make up only one goal, and put on a second, but as the run of the game will show they could not do it. This was not through lock of good play among their forwards, but the grand defence of the Rangers backs. The Rangers kicked off, and it was at once began to attack the 3rd L.R.V. goal, and had a throw-in a few feet from the corner flag, and not long afterwards the ball was fouled in a scrimmage well up on the left post. The siege which followed was a close and exciting one, and Gow at length sent the ball away. The game afterwards became more even, and a good run by Thomson and Johnstone ended in a second exciting scrimmage, and the ball was sent past the posts. The goalkeeper kick-out was followed by a neat run on the part of McCreadie, after the ball was passed to him by Sellars, and the Rangers were in front again, and working like demons to get the leather between the posts, Lochhead cleared, and from a well arranged run the 3rd L.R.V. men had another turn at the Rangers lines, and in the scrimmage which ensued about ten yards from the goal. Lochhead left his place at halfback, and coming well in line with the posts, let the ball spin from his right foot, and clean through goal. This made the contest equal – one goal all. ‘Face up in the centre’ was now the word of command, and the Rangers again found their way up the field, and in attacking the Volunteers lines they had a couple of fouls near the posts, but the 3rd L.R.V. backs played well and saved. Time was now wearing on, and the excitement increasing, when the Volunteers got a corner flag kick. The ball was neatly put in front of the posts by Lapsley, but the Rangers backs – Sellars and Gow – beat backs the tide of invasion in brilliant form, and all danger was at length averted. By and by, to the intense relief of the thousands of patrons of both clubs, no more scoring occurred, and the game again ended in a tie – one goal all
