Match Trivia
My story is not a new one. You have heard it before. And said, how do they do it . . .? And that is what I fully expect you to say as you sit this Sunday morn and hear how once again, Rangers won after looking damaged and down. There I was up in that Ibrox Press-box, writing a way at a pleasing little obituary notice directly concerning Rangers. The time was four minutes to go, and I had just reached the point where I was declaring boldly that any team who made as many mistakes as Rangers had made had absolutely no right to become annoyed with defeat. Well, it was at that moment that Scott Symon took the free-kick. James Smith headed it on and Hamilton, who had been running around loosely without achieving much except a load of mistakes, shot the ball in. So, there it was, the inevitable goal that pulls Rangers out if the frequent tight hole . . . there it was, the old, always interesting story. Another followed in another minute, and it was a good goal scored by the only really good Rangers forward Johnstone. He took up a Smith slip and whipped in a brilliantly hard shot that Crozier got along to but couldnt stop. If this well-disciplined reporter was ever near to shedding tears for any soccer team, he was frighteningly near to shedding them for an exceedingly plucky Airdrie team who did quite enough to earn one point. Their defensive work was so good that Rangers must have occasionally wondered if perhaps they werent hauling in extra backs from the touchlines . . .! Bruce was brilliant. The others were almost as good as Bruce . . .!
