Match Trivia
A record crowd of 20,00 at Clydeholm saw Rangers inflict a record defeat on Clydebank. In five minutes Rangers took the lead through McLean, who whipped a fast grounder into the corner of the net. Rangers’ halves were great spoilers and never allowed the home forwards to settle, while they gave their own attackers every assistance. Clydebank’s play was weak. Even when Harris did get an opening, he shot weakly into Hempsey’s hands. McLean was too much for Gilhooley, and giving him the slip, drew the defence. Then he sent Aitken down the right wing. The winger crossed nicely to Lawson, who, lying unmarked two yards from goal put the Rangers two up. For five minutes looked like making a fight of it, a couple of corners granted them in quick succession taking some clearing. Rangers led 2-0 at the turn. The ‘Bank resumed brightly, and another brace of corners fell to their lot, but there was lack of steadiness in their finishing. The home defence than let the Ibrox vanguard through again, and Cairns was gifted a simple goal. Rangers eased off for a time and Clydebank tried hard, but unsuccessfully for a goal. The Ibrox defence held the whip hand. McLean came away in his best style, and a characteristic burst through saw him give McTurk no earthly. Five minutes from time, and from a good angle, the Rangers’ centre scored a fifth glorious goal, and thus completed the hat trick. Till the finish there was only one team in it, and that was not Clydebank. Rangers had early the pull forward and at half-back, McLean was in rampant form in the second half, and Aitken’s speed was too much for the home defence. Bowie was quietly effective, and Cairns bustled around tirelessly, while Dixon and Walls reduced the home attack to impotency. Clydebank have seldom been so far out of it, their defence being well under par. McGregor was the better back. The half-backs were overwhelmed, while the forwards were anxious but disjoined.
