Match Trivia

It was a strange mixture this meeting of the top and bottom clubs in the League tourney. There was half an hour of good football, and the rest – well, one could scarcely call it thrilling. Hibs lost most of their goals when they were playing the better game. For the first twenty minutes they were full of good football, and Hempsey had a lot more to do than he has hard for a time. Kilpatrick led a very aggressive forward line, and with the halves following up well, and McGinnigle and Dornan punting with confidence, one looked for Hibs scoring first. Rangers’ forwards took a long time to settle, but Lawson set the pace, and Cairns and McLean travelled the ball well up. It was a toss up which was to shoot, but neither made the attempt, and the ball landed at the foot of Bowie, who shot true and hard. Gough had no chance. Five minutes later Bowie drove another home. Hibs didn’t look like a beaten side yet, and strong combination between Kay and McCourt gave the centre some fine openings. It was left to Robertson to score, however. The left-winger had a good touch-line run; he lofted the ball into goal, and Hempsey gathering none too well, dropped the ball over the goal-line. A minute later Hibs were pressing again and Dixon in saving almost beat his own goalkeeper. Then came number three from Rangers, Cairns had a great run up. Gough came out, and his mistake cost Hibs a third goal. Rangers were now very nippy, and Bowie and the inside right put on a fourth goal. The second half was a game of Rangers attack and Hibs defending. Many clever touches were shown by Aitken, Pursell and Bowie. Lawson struck up a great chumship with Cairns. Rangers were not very anxious to score, but McLean could not resist putting home a fifth. He did nothing else all the game. Hibs lost because they hadn’t a Bowie in front nor a Dixon in the half-back line. Their middle line was very tagged indeed, Gordon being, however, a tireless worker. The Hibernian forwards and backs showed cleverness.
