Match Trivia
At Hampden Park, Glasgow estimated attendance 70,000 drawings (gate and stands) £1958. The money and attendance have never been equalled at a club match in Scotland. Celtic who had a strong breeze in their favour the first half were early prominent. Their left wing made most headway, and from a centre McMenemy just missed with a header. After Smith had broken away Bennett spoiled a fine opening, and McNair returning the ball Quinn shot into Rennie, who saved. Once again the Celtic centre burst through the halves only to be run over the goal line by Law, but at length Quinn following a lofty punt beat both backs and headed the ball quit out of Rennie’s reach. Rangers were more in the game after this, McPherson in particular showing neat football, but the strength of the Celtic halves told, and in the last 20 minutes they practically monopolised the play. Stark cleared in succession from Quinn and Munro and Somers twice caused Rennie to handle. In the second half Rangers opened well, Smith just missing with a long shot. Thereafter Celtic had most pf the lay for 10 minutes, but although Munro and Somers centred well the defence was equal to all calls. After this period Rangers altered their front line, Bennett going into centre and Campbell and Gilchrist forming the right wing. The alteration was for the better, and Rangers monopolised the play until they put themselves a goal ahead. Eighteen minutes from the finish Gilchrist caught a centre and scored, and three minutes later Bennett after a delightful run scored a second point. In the last 10 minutes Celtic recovered somewhat, and Munro flashing a shot into Rennie, the goalkeeper in evading Quinn swung the ball over the line and Celtic drew a sensational game. Halfback play was the feature of the game, but the Rangers backs, Bennett, McPherson and McMenemy, all did well
