Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park before 11,000 spectators in splendid football weather. The opening exchanges were of a fairly even character. The Rangers front line gradually worked their way past the opposing halves, but in spite of fine centres by Smith, McLay and Rombach always had the better of the exchanges with the Rangers forwards. Newbigging owing to the weakness of Hendry and Campbell was several times called upon, and at last he was beaten by a hard drive from short range by Dargue after a perfect cross by Hunter. The Rangers were not long in equalising. Dickie was fouled, and from the free kick the ball was sent across to Smith, be slipped it across to Spiers who scored. There was no more scoring at halftime, although both defences had been severely taxed. Halftime – One goal each. On resuming the Rangers exhibited more dash, and more combination forward than in the first half the result being that McLay, Rombach and Duncan were kept busy. The visitors seldom got the length of Newbigging. And even when they did the goalkeeper accomplished all that was asked of him. From a free kick May had the ball between the posts and in the back of the net before Duncan properly realised what had happened. The visitors replied to this unlooked for reverse with some good forward play, but Newbigging was unbeatable. Duncan’s goal after this underwent several narrow escapes. A little later the visitors through Hunter, O’Rorke and Dargue did their utmost to obtain the equaliser, but failed competently at close quarters in spite of really good outfield work. Result – Rangers 2 goals: Airdrieonians 1. Drawings £279 11s
