Match Trivia
This match was played at Ibrox in foggy weather before 12,000 spectators. Play was very fast from the start, with the Thistle showing better form forward than their opponents. Newbigging had several times to save, and Howden was also called upon. Clever wing play by Wilkie, and Sommen kept Campbell and Jackson busy. A spirit along the wing by Wilkie, who had been playing consistently well from the start, led to Kennedy getting an opening close in, and Newbigging, failing to time the ball was beaten. The Rangers played desperately for the equaliser, but the backs and Howden could not be beaten. Halftime – Partick Thistle 1 goal: Rangers 0. The Rangers who had displayed their best form near the close of the first half, started the second half, with Kivlichan at centre and Hamilton outside wing, with two promising- looking attacks on Howden’s goal. Then the Thistle opened out the game, and Campbell and Jackson were frequently in difficulties. After some fine forcing play by the Rangers forwards, who were assisted by the halves, and backs Hamilton equalised the score with a shot close in. The Thistle after this reverse played even better than before, and Kennedy after tricking Jackson again beat the Rangers custodian. The Rangers replied with strong aggressive forward play, and Kivlichan just failed to score with a grand shot, the ball striking the bar and rebounding into play. The ground team had the better of the closing minutes, but in spite of this they did not get on equal terms with their opponents, who retired winners of a strenuous game in which several players met with accidents. Result – Partick Thistle 2 goals: Rangers 1. The drawings amounted to £301
