Match Trivia
At Meadowside last night these teams met in the first of the Charity ties, and the weather being fine, there was an encouraging attendance, £93 being taken. Corner-kicks were counted to avoid a draw encouraging, but the innovation was not put to a practical test, as the Rangers were beaten pointless. The Rangers forced matters at the start, a nice run by Smith and Speedie ending in the inside man forcing Howden to clear. The ensuring play was fast and even, but the Rangers moved with a better understanding, and there was more promise about their play. With a fine shot Smith struck the crossbar, and Low catching up the rebound shot just a trifle too high. After this the Thistle took up a strong lead, and forced the first corner off Sinclair. The Thistle were now playing in irresistible form, and Lawrie scored a splendid goal twenty minutes from the start. There was now practically only one team in it, and several corners fell to the Thistle, whilst Kennedy missed a grand opening. Lawrie was mainly responsible for a second goal. He beat the back sent strongly into the centre, and Kennedy scored. A penalty kick to the Thistle followed, bit only a corner resulted. Halftime – Thistle 2 goals 5 corners: Rangers nil. On resuming May and Craig changed places, but this did not help the Rangers much as the Thistle backs acting in splendid unison with their goalkeeper experienced no difficulty in repelling their advances. The Thistle were all over the cleverest team, and W Gray scored a marvellous goal with an overhead kick. Lawrie then struck the crossbar, but Gray made amends by again beating Sinclair after a well executed run in which the whole of the Thistle forwards took part. Another penalty to the Thistle went unconverted, but near the finish W Gray was again successful. Result – Partick Thistle 5 goals 6 corners: Rangers nil
