Match Trivia
There was a most gratifying attendance at Hampden Park to witness the final tie for the Charity Cup. Fully 26,000 paid for admission, a tribute to the good cause in which the clubs were engaged and the gate drawing powers of these old rivals. The ground was in good order, but a troublesome wind blew along the pitch. Quinn kicked off against the wind and the Rangers defence was immediately in difficulties. Thanks to cool play by Fraser who cleared twice, the Celts were driven back. The Rangers now became very aggressive, but they dribbled too close in on the opposing backs, who tackled and cleared splendidly. The Celts were quickly on the offensive again, and Watson was lucky in clearing twice. Settling down to more methodical play, the Ibrox team bombarded the Celtic goal, and Adams was unbeatable although A Smith gave him some anxious moments. From a long drive Mackie opened the scoring and the Celts who had to play without Quinn, who retired injured, were content afterwards to defend their goal. Right on to the interval the Rangers pressed almost incessantly. Halftime Rangers 1 goal: Celtic 0. The Rangers resumed in brilliant style, Smith carried up the ball against the wind, beating Young on the way and centred to Robertson, who scored giving Adams no chance to save. Donnachie quickly followed with a third point, after which the Celts who were still short-handed played up desperately, and scored twice the first taken by Hamilton being a grand one. The Rangers again got set a going, and Robertson by sheer pluck scored. The Celtic defence lost their heads at this stage and from a penalty Speedie beat Adams. The Celts strove hard to reduce the leeway, but without success, and the Rangers ran out deserved winners of an exceedingly hard fast game. Result – Rangers 5 goals: Celtic 2 goals. Drawings £681 – This added to the £700 already drawn, makes the handsome total of £1381
