Match Trivia
Played at Celtic Park in splendid weather before about 40,000 spectators. The game started very fast, the Rangers in the first minute getting down on McArthur, who lucky in stooping a swift shot from Hamilton. Thereafter the Celtic took the game in hand, and for the next half-hour they bombarded Dickie’s goal, but could only get through once, Campbell beating Dickie with an easy shot well out. The Celtic defence was very reliable, and it was seldom they were beaten, but near halftime Graham got the better of Welford, and sprinting into goal he made the scores level. Haltime result – Rangers 1 goal: Celtic 1 goal. The second half had not gone far ere the Celtic again got in the lead, Neil from a corner in attempting to clear heading the ball into his own goal. The game was stubbornly contested, the Celtic proving themselves the superiors of their opponenets in the rapidly moving action of their forwards, who have not been seen to better advantage this season. The game increased in interest when the Rangers again, through Graham equalised. Both teams played in the closing stages with more determination than head, and consequently both failed to utilise numerous chances to further add to their score till near the finish. McMahon who was hardly able to stand the strain of such a severe contest headed through the Celt’s third goal, and when all seemed lost to the Rangers A Smith broke through and drew the match. The game was remarkable all through for the easy, accurate passing of the Celts forwards and for the plodding defence of their opponent’s halves, who never brilliant were seldom off the ball. The result - a draw of three goals – fairly indicated the value of a game so full of importance.
