Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park before over 30,000 spectators, and in a gale of wind. The Rangers had the wind behind them in the first half, but they never settle down to a suitable game, and were easily held in check by the Celtic defence, which with Storrier and Doyle in their best form were not easily beaten. There were few occasions on which the Rangers forwards showed any combination, although Gibson, Neil and Mitchell placed well to them, but would have done better to shoot often. Hamilton in centre wandered about a good deal, and his passing was sadly lacking in precision. A foul against Doyle for kicking Wilkie was well placed, and Campbell scored the only point gained in the first half. Crossing over, the Rangers showed a great improvement in their style, and it was most unfortunate for them that A Smith met with an accident, Battles giving him a severe kick otherwise they would have done much better. As it was, they troubled the Celtic defence very considerably, and were often down on McArthur. Strong back play let the Celtic off, and they for a time hemmed in the Rangers, but their best shots were easily dealt with by Dickie, who kept a grand goal. The Rangers got well away, and Hamilton, by superior speed rushed through between Storrier and Doyle, and got on the ball, which he sent into the net, but the referee, disallowed the point on the rules of offside. A couple of minutes from the close Storrier shot from midfield, and the ball was headed by Gilhooley past Dickie, but as the referee did not notice the final touch by the inside right, he gave a goal. With the scores even, play was very fast up to the finish, but no further scoring took place. Result – Rangers 1 goal: Celtic 1 goal.
