Match Trivia

The close fight the Bridgeton team had made at Ibrox lent unto their supporters hopeful thoughts for the return at their own peculiar particular Park. Rangers having been beaten at Dundee rather dispelled this, and was not looked on as a happy augury by the Clyde folks, as they felt that ‘somebody’ would have to play for the Dundee indiscretion, and that, as they were the first team to be dealt with, there was every probability of their being unfortunate enough to fill the caste of ‘somebody’. But seven against two – No, never did they conjure such a score before their vision. The numbers were hoisted as opening, and closing movements, the ‘Wee Clyde’ responding with their singles at the end of the bigger efforts their conquerors purveyed. The play was devoid of any real interest one team provided the show, the other straggled hither and thither. We cannot understand the Clyde forwards, not a bit. We have seen them not a few times this season, and they are an erratic lot without a doubt, but Saturday’s display was the most puerile they have yet made. The right wing was next to useless. Repeatedly this couple tried to dribble round Drummond, passing or crossing they never tried. The centre was fair, and the left wing but a degree better than the right. Bowie, Paterson and Stevenson were played to a standstill. Never a help did they get from the inside men. Hannah and McDonald were very good, and Shields fairly rose to the occasion. He was the best tried and most successful player on the field. The Rangers were never stretched and were always on top, Miller took the eye most despite the ‘taking’ rushes of Smith and Low and the deadly shooting of Hyslop (who was otherwise only a moderate success). Gibson without doubt, is the star artiste of the half-backs. He is a real gem. Crawford and Drummond were rarely troubled. Dickie fumbled in handing, but kicked finely. The 4000 or so who witnessed the game were not exuberant over the display. Even the Light Blues were disappointed thay had such an easy thing. All over the Clyde were outplayed, and never at any time did they play to inspire their followers with hope and their opponents with fear.
