Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox ark, before 8000 spectators. The Third against a slight breeze, made an effort to get down on Montgomery from the kick off, and they would have been successful, but for Smith, who was in close attendance, and returned the ball with a fine swinging kick. The Third rather surprised their supporters, especially after the poor performances against the Leith Athletic and Clyde. Cleland had a fine try at Montgomery, and Henderson rushed in and bowled over the custodian, but not before he struck the ball out. Bell, the old Dumbarton player and Drummond had several encounters, the Third man having the best of them. Nearing halftime the play became faster than ever, the Third carrying everything before them. Bell got the better of Montgomery, and placed the ball in the net. The Rangers from the kick-off almost equalised, Ross clearing brilliantly. From a pass by Cleland Bell scored the second goal for the Third. A minute later the Rangers through sheer determination scored their first goal. Halftime result – Third 2: Rangers 1. On resuming the Rangers opened out again, and gave a glimpse of what they could do. At goal they were very troublesome, the vigilance of Ross standing his team well. Blair gave away a corner, which brought about a warm scrimmage, which the Third ultimately broke up, and got dangerously near Montgomery’s goal. They were smartly returned, and another corner was given in favour of the Rangers, who gained no benefit from it. The Third improved, their forwards indulging in a lot of tricky work. The Rangers backs and halfback kept their opponents at bay with genuine hard work. Getting beyond midfield, McPherson tried his luck with a long shot, which to the astonishment of players and spectators went into the net, Ross evidently thinking the ball was going past. The Rangers were now in full swing, and one of the best runs of the day was initiated by McPherson, taken part in by Barker, and finally ended with Hamilton heading the ball over the crossbar. Ten minutes from time the Third shook off the Rangers, whose play was very fine all round, and once more found themselves near the Rangers goal, but excitement interfered with their movements, and Smith slipped the ball away, and left the Third scratching their heads. Following up Smith kick the Rangers swarmed round Ross’s goal, and after a fierce scrimmage the ball was forced through by Hamilton five minutes from time, thus giving the Rangers the lead for the first time during the game. The game was a splendid one from beginning to end, and was either team’s till the closing moments. The result was – Rangers 3 goals: Third Lanark 2 goals.
