Match Trivia

In weather far too warm for football, the Celtic and the Rangers met on Celtic Park, Parkhead to decide the final for the Charity cup. The Rangers kicked off, and the Celts at once commenced to press their opponents, but Gow and Drummond had little difficulty in defending their charge. From a pass by W Maley it looked as if a goal would result, but the ball was ultimately headed past. So far, at anyrate the game was anything but contested in spirited fashion, but as lay preceded the enthusiasm increased somewhat. Haddow was cheered for a clever piece of saving when everybody thought the ball would go through. The Celts continued to have the best of the play that was going, and Dunbar had a good but ineffectual try for goal, the ball just going over the bar by a few inches. Taken on its broad backs, the game was anything but interesting, the men being palpably out of condition, and unable to kick. The first corner kick fell to the Celts and it was beautifully taken by Madden, but was headed away by the Rangers. The Celts however returned to the attack, and Campbell, after 25 minutes play, scored a simple goal for the home side. Encouraged by enthusiastic shouts, the Rangers raised the siege, and but for determined defence they would in all probability have scored. Another goal fell to the Celts after 30 minutes play, Campbell who looked the freshest on the field, sending the ball through with a capital shot. From a fine return by W Maley, Blessington scored the third goal for the Celts, and at this early stage it looked all over with the Rangers. From some clever work in front of the Ibrox lads goal Curran centred well, and Campbell shot the fourth goal for the Celts, who seemed bent on creating a record. From another pass by Maley, Dowds had no difficulty in scoring the fifth goal for his side. At halftime the score was – Celtic 5: Rangers 0. The Rangers led off the second half in dashing style, but had hard luck in front of goal. The Celtic were not long in finding their way to the other end, where Haddow had to fist out a well-judged shot. Madden then forced a corner, which nearly resulted in the ball being headed through. The Rangers had several good chances, but seemed totally incapable of sending the ball through. Still they were displaying improved form, and with a little luck should have scored. The play was of a ludicrous character, and call for a little or no description. The Celtic seemed to content themselves by defending their goal; at all events they seemed to make very little effort to get away. The result – Celtic 5 goals: Rangers 0 goals.
