Match Trivia

Abercorn opened their season on Saturday by engaging in a friendly game with the Rangers. The match took place on Underground Park, Paisley, the ground of the Abercorn, in favourable weather, and in presence of a large crowd of spectators. Abercorn started, Millar setting the ball in motion. The home team had the wind in their favour and slowly worked their way down the field, a splendid piece of tackling between the forwards of both teams taking place to the stranger’s territory. Seeing an opportunity, Millar and Wallace got the leather down towards Haddow, and the former put on the first goal of the game for the home team, after about three minutes play. Within another two minutes, McLardie from a long shot registered a second, which was the signal for renewed cheering on the part of the Abercorn supporters. Shortly after this the Light Blues began to pick up somewhat, and several determined efforts were made by H McCreadie, Gray, Barker and Marshall to improve the position of their team. The Abercorn defence however was rather strong for them, and their work was un-rewarded. With five minutes of the first half to go the Rangers got away in a body, and succeeded in getting into close quarters with McCann. Blyth, Mitchell, A McCreadie and Marshall were prominent in the scrimmage, which ensured, but although there were several narrow shaves, the ball could not be got through. No further scoring took place in this half, the halftime result being – Abercorn 2: Rangers 0. The second half started well. Abercorn getting away at the beginning, McLardie had a shot at Haddow charge, which however that player managed to clear with little bother. Rangers then put in some strong play, and a shot from H McCreadie just missed scoring, the ball striking the post and rebounding into lay. A foul in favour of the Light blues put the home goal in jeopardy, and the kick, which Marshall put in causing not a little trouble before it was got rid of. It may be said, however for the Rangers that they were playing a remarkable good game, passing and re-passing in a clever manner. Probably they passed too freely at time throwing away what looked like favourable chances in their own anxiety to beat McCann. A word of praise is due to the Abercorn custodian for his cool and effective work at goal. Indeed the defence of the Abercorn back lot left little to be desired. Within the last few minutes of the game, the play of the strangers was more effective, and Mitchell succeeded in putting on one goal for them. This called the scoring, and the final result was – Abercorn 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal.
