Match Trivia
The second League fixture between these teams was played at Ibrox Park, Govan. The weather was delightful, but the crowd was rather meagre, only about 3000 people being present. Losing the toss the Rangers kicked off against the wind, and with the sun in their eyes. The Third at once obtained possession. Thomson in defending put the ball over the line. The corner came to nothing. Again the Third got on the ball, and aided by the breeze, they soon had it in the vicinity of Haddow. Wilson got a pass from Henderson, which Drummond missed, and with a shot, which gave Haddow no chance, he scored the first goal for the Third. The Rangers nettled at this early reverse, retaliated, and with a little luck they should have equalised. A McCreadie and Reid each had a try, but the ball struck someone each time and rebounded into play. Scott finished it by shooting far over the bar. Keeping up the pressure the Rangers had several corners, but neither had the desired effect. Towards the close of this half the Third put on a spurt, and Haddow had to fist out a shot from Brodie, Reid relieved, but his pass out was too strong, and the ball went over the line. From the throw-in Oswald had a try at goal, but Drummond cleared with a splendid effort. Halftime result – Third Lanark 1: Rangers 0. After a short interval the game was resumed, the Third this half having the wind and sun against them. McCreadie sent in a beauty, which nearly beat Docherty. Ere tow minutes had gone the Rangers obtained a corner, Smith cleared, but Marshall returned smartly and Reid tried a header, but the ball went over the bar. The Rangers made a perfect raid on the Third’s goal, but they could not get the ball through. Shot after shot was sent in, but all were wide. At last from a free kick five yards from goal, McCreadie managed to equalise. From a miss-kick by Freebairn, the Third’s left wing had a try, but Johnstone sent the ball behind. From the goal kick the Rangers again got down on Docherty, and Barker gave him a beauty to hold. Another brace of corners to the Rangers were unproductive of any change. A third corner, taken by McPherson was smartly caught by Barker, and that player with a lovely shot scored the second goal for the Rangers. Final result – Rangers 2 goals: Third Lanark 1 goal.
