Match Trivia

This important League match was played at Tynecastle, Edinburgh, in presence of 5000 spectators. A strong and gusty wind nullified against finishing play, bur despite this disadvantage a splendid game was witnessed, both teams showing excellent form. One of the few bad slips of the game was made in the first two minutes by Adams and Scott, getting on the ball scored an easy goal. The Hearts had the best of the play after this, but heir forwards gave the Rangers backs too many opportunities of showing their kicking powers, and as the Glasgow forwards made capital use of the chances which offered themselves, they were very dangerous on several occasions. At length the Hearts began to pull better together, and as neither Drummond nor Dunbar proved so reliable when pressed the Edinburgh men gained a lead before halftime, Taylor scoring the best goal of the match from a scrimmage, while Baird enabled Russell to put on a second point. Crossing over a goal down, the Ibrox men gave a splendid exhibition of forward play early in the second period, and McPherson equalised the game. The feature of the subsequent play were pretty passing by the Rangers and dashing runs by the Hearts, the halfbacks on either side backing up their forwards in capital style. A long scrimmage near the Rangers goal yielded the Hearts a third point. Play continued fast and pleasant till shortly before the close, when Goodfellow rushing at A McCreadie who was making for the ball, raised his foot in a dangerous but not necessarily intentionally rough manner, and caught the Ranger on the hip, inflicting a nasty hurt. McCreadie was rendered incapable of taking further part in the game, and Mr McLean, Alexandria, the referee, taking a serious view of the occurrence ordered Goodfellow off the field. No further scoring was done, and the Hearts were a trifle lucky in repeating their former one-goal victory, the score being Hearts three goals: Rangers two goals.
