Match Trivia

Scottish Cup tie played at Kilmarnock, there was 3000 spectators present. McBain kicked off, the Rangers having lost the toss. The game started with a bold inroad from the Rangers, in which McPherson and McCreadie were prominent. Hunter then stepped in, and gave them the right about, and after several passages of play in midfield the ball went out to McAvoy and Kelvin, Marshall hesitated to tackle, and the ball was slipped out to Kelvin. He was suspiciously offside, but he let bang at Haddow. The Rangers goalkeeper was astonished by the shot, and ere he had to recover Brodie rushed him through, and on went the first goal for Kilmarnock, amid tremendous cheering. It was a smart performance, and deserving of the success, which resulted from such a complete attack. The ground was in fine order, but a bit soft. The game was like that of the previous week, hard and determined attack and defence being its characteristic. The players were too excited to settle, and though there was plenty of dash displayed, there was no particularly brilliant feature about it. The ground men had the benefit of a good breeze behind them, and they were more frequently found pressing. The Rangers got well down, and forced a corner, but it proved unproductive, as did also a shot from Kerr. The game was being well contested, but Kilmarnock were more successful on the ball than their opponents. A free kick at an angle from the Rangers goal gave Kilmarnock a likely opening, but Campbell shot over the after Scott had headed out. At halftime the score stood – Kilmarnock 1: Rangers 0. The second half was contested in a similar manner to the first save that the Rangers did the greater amount of the pressing. They played their lever best, and completely wore out their opponents, bur score they could not against the clever back play and goalkeeping of their opponenets. At length Kerr equalised with a very swift shot about ten minutes from the finish. The result was a draw – 1 goal each.
