Match Trivia

The above teams met on the ground of the former at Paisley in their League fixture. The afternoon was wet, and the attendance of spectators was not on that account very large. The greater portion of the opening half was greatly in favour of the Rangers, who also commenced the scoring, McPherson securing a goal. The Rangers were still pressing, when a long drive by Hunter cleared the men back from the Saints, bringing about a complete change in the play. So closely did they now attack that two fouls in rapid succession were now awarded, and from the second Wylie go the ball and put the teams on equal terms. Two minutes later, Hamilton had the ball past Haddow, but ‘offside’ spoiled the effort. More lucky immediately afterwards McCartney, from halfback position, beat Haddow with a high shot, which this time was a ‘bona-fide’ one. To the surprise of the crowd, another quickly followed. Morrison got into his corner with the ball, and Douglas coming to his assistance, passed the ball right in front of Haddow, and Hamilton had no difficultly in putting through the third goal. Another goal was put on for the Saints by Hamilton again, but a foul had been claimed before this, and the goal did not count. Rather curious the Saints were robbed of another goal on the point of halftime. As Douglas was placing the ball past Haddow for the sixth time, Mr McLaughlan was blowing his whistle, and so the goal did not count. The teams crossed over, the score being – St Mirren 3 goals: Rangers 1. On resuming the Saints again assumed the aggressive. From the front of Haddow they were driven back by Dunbar, and between Mitchell and A McCreadie the Saints were further forced down the field. This enabled the Rangers to improve their position. As the result of a keen attack, taken part in by the Rangers entire front line, McPherson saw an opening, and placed the ball past Fleming. Still following up their advantage a third goal was taken by Kerr, and a few minutes later McGowan had a fourth. The Rangers had now the leading point. After leading for a time, it disconcerted the ground team now to be in the minority. They played up hard, the ground team could not improve their position. The match ended Rangers 4 goals: St Mirren 3 goals.
