Match Trivia

At Ibrox Park, Govan, fully 3000 spectators were present. Having loss the toss, McPherson kicked off for the Rangers. The pass was taken up by Kerr, but ere he had gone many yards, Masterton stopped his progress. Play was confined to midfield for some time, occasionally each side had a shot, but the respective goalkeepers proved equal to the calls made on them. At last after 20 minutes play, a pass from Hill gave Scott a chance, and he beat Haddow with a curious shot, thus registering the first goal for the Hearts. The Rangers strove hard to equalise, but their efforts were fruitless. McCreadie put in some clever runs, and from one of those he passed to McPherson, who nearly beat Fairbairn, who had to throw himself on the ground to get the ball away. From a combined run it looked as if the Hearts would increase their score, but Hodge interfered and spoiled the chance. With the ball in midfield the whistle sounded. Halftime result – Heart of Midlothian 1 goal: Rangers 0. On resuming, the Rangers came out with only ten men, Henderson who was suffering from a severe cold, absolutely refusing to take further part in the game. Notwithstanding this, the play of the Rangers seemed to improve, and they kept their opponents back division busy. They could not fins an opening however, Scott at centre half, was sending in some splendid shots, but none of them had the desired effect. The Hearts occasionally broke away, but they were seldom dangerous. Several corners fell to each of the teams, but all were fruitless. McCreadie on the Rangers left was the best man on the field, with Scott of the Hearts next. Each team strove hard to improve their position, but no further scoring took place. The Rangers were unfortunate in losing. Final result – Heart of Midlothian 1 goal: Rangers 0
