Match Trivia

The undecided tie for the trophy between the 3rd L.R.V. and Rangers came off at Cathkin Park in wretched weather, rain falling heavily all the time the game lasted, and once more ended in a draw, with three goals all. The finish, despite the state of the ground, was really an exciting and brilliant one, as the Rangers actually put on two goals in the last five minutes. The crowd numbering about 8000 stood out the pitiless rain and wind to the last and even hung about the ground after the hour and half of play was finished, eager to see the last of a memorable cup tie. The extra half-hour, however was not played, as the teams positively refused to continue the game under the circumstances. The referee waited on the field for the players, and as they did not come out he will have to report the matter to the Glasgow Association. The Rangers emerged from the pavilion first, and had a punt about to keep themselves warm in the rain, and about ten minutes afterwards the Volunteers appeared and took up their position at the lower goal from which the wind was blowing. Preliminaries being at length settled in the centre, the Rangers kicked off, and Kerr’s start was well taken up by his right hand companion, and the strangers soon had the ball over the lines in a scrimmage. After the kick out the ball was well sent up by Lochhead, and Thomson had a good shy that Gow caught in the air and sent spinning down the field, and it was again put over the 3rd L.R.V. lines. The next kick out in front was followed by a smart run on the part of the 3rd L.R.V. and from a bit of passing on the right Thomson got the ball and made a shy that Sellars headed over the bar, and gave the Volunteers a corner flag kick. No advantage however was gained, as the leather went over the goal line. After this the Rangers made a good combined run by McPherson and Kerr, and getting down on the 3rd L.R.V. lines the Ibrox Park club got past the backs, and Kerr caused McFarlane to kick behind his own lines and give the strangers a corner flag kick. After this the Volunteers warmed up considerably, and from a scrimmage on the left goal-post Thomson, after missing the ball, recovered himself in an instant, and sent the leather through. The Rangers appealed for off-side, but the point was all right, and the teams again faced up in the centre. The ball had no sooner been started again than the Cathkin Park men made another brilliant attempt to score, and after a terrible scrimmage from a corner flag kick, Scott lifted the ball neatly with his foot and sent it past Reid. The game was now two goals to the 3rd L.R.V. and none to the Rangers, who had the next kick off, got well down on the Volunteers lines, and a throw in by McPherson was followed by a scrimmage near the right goal-post. When the ball emerged from the scrimmage Burke got possession and dribbled up the field till he came to Gow, and that player saved by making a clever return. The play was now more even, and the Rangers had a turn at the 3rd L.R.V. goal, and Kerr lost an east chance by sending the leather over the lines near the left corner flag. The kick out, however was followed by a hard run on the part of the 3rd L.R.V. and the ball being brought up close on the Rangers goal, a scrimmage occurred, from which a third goal was scored by Burke. Not long after the next kick off the halftime whistle sounded, leaving the Volunteers three goals to the good. It was now the 3rd L.R.V. turn to play against the wind, and they had no sooner started than a free kick was awarded the Rangers. The ball did not travel very far, however till it was cleared by Scott, and sent down on the Rangers lines. An exciting scrimmage was the result, and from it the ball travelled dangerously near the posts, but a kick from Sellars relieved the ‘Blues’ and the left division of the Rangers had an open field. Getting close in, the pair parted company too soon, and Scott came out and considerably interfered with the strangers calculations and sent the ball away. A fight for possession was now seen between Gow on the one side, and Thomson on the other. The Rangers man came off best, and cleared the leather away. From a throw-in not very far from the 3rd L.R.V. posts McPherson made a coon shot at the posts, but the ball was headed out by Scott, who stood right in front of the keeper. A kick down the field afterwards, taken by Thomson, enabled the 3rd L.R.V. to get down on the Rangers lines, and Reid had to chuck out the ball after a hard shy by Johnstone. After this some even play occurred in midfield, and eventually the Rangers worked the ball well up on the 3rd L.R.V. goal. One of the backs in defending fouled it near the pavilion, and from the scrimmage the Rangers made a determined effort, and Hislop kicked the leather through. Only 20 minutes of the game were now at the disposal of the combatants, and from the next start from midfield the Rangers looked like scoring again, but Wyllie lost a good chance by sending a fast shot over the bar. After the kick out by the goalkeeper the 3rd L.R.V. made a smart combined run up on the stranger’s goal, but the ball was returned, and a beautiful piece of passing on the slippery ground was witnessed when Hislop, Wyllie, McPherson and McCreadie dribbled and passed to each other in fine line. The latter parting shot however was taken too late, as the Volunteers backs found time to line up in front and save. Back the ball came, however and McCreadie getting well in scored a second point for his team. Only two minutes were now left to settle the contest, and this little period proved the most exciting of the whole contest, and clearly demonstrated the genuine ability of the younger club to rise to a great occasion. Dashing on the ball as soon as it was returned from the 3rd L.R.V. kick-off, the Rangers forwards had it up on their opponents lines in a twinkling, and a determined scrimmage occurred at the mouth of the Volunteers goal. Smith, McFarlane and Scott did their best to beat back the tide of invasion, but it was of no use, as the Rangers virtually rushed the ball through, and Kerr was the last man on it before it passed Downie. This made the contest three goals all, and as we have already explained, the extra half-hour was not played, and another draw is the result
