Match Trivia

This being the only contest of much consequence in the Glasgow district on Saturday, a large number of spectators attended at Ibrox Park, the fine ground of the Rangers to see the meeting between that club and the Glasgow Charity Cup holders. The weather being fine, and the ground in good order, the game proved a fine one from start to finish, and eventually ended in favour of the visitors by three goals to two. The Rangers won the toss, and played with what little wind there was in their favour. The Renton team kicked off, and kept the play pretty even for a time, but at length the Rangers crowded round their opponents lines, and a fine shot by Marshall took effect. The next kick-off was followed by some pretty even play, and a fine run on part of the Renton forwards, but the Rangers backs returned the ball in capital style, and a second goal was made for the light blues by Allan centring the ball to Wyllie when he was in a good place. At this point the Rangers were tow goals to the good, and the game looked their to a certainty. After the next kick-off however a change came over the game, as the strangers soon besieged the Rangers lines, and a scrimmage occurred near the home clubs lines. Some of the Rangers claimed a ‘foul’ and while several of the players stopped their work altogether the ball was put through in a scrimmage. The appeal for ‘no goal’ was dismissed, and not long afterwards the Renton scored again through Davie, so that at halftime the teams were equal, with two goals all. In the second round the Rangers kicked off against the wind, and made a bold dash up to the Renton stronghold, where an exciting scrimmage took place. They were, however soon beaten off by the steady play of the backs, and the ball was eventually carried to midfield where some even play was the order of the day. As the game advanced a draw looked like being the result, but a grand spurt by the Renton men settled the matter by McCall scoring a pretty goal, and when the whistle sounded the strangers were hailed the victors by the close majority of three goals to two.
