Match Trivia

This tie, which proved the most attractive in the Glasgow division, took place on the ground of the Thistle, at Whiteinch in presence of at least 4000 spectators, including a large contingent of local men. As was expected from the first, the game proved a pretty close and exciting one, and ended in favour of the Thistle by two goals to one. The Rangers were somewhat crippled by the appearance of two of their second eleven men in the team, and in the first round had decidedly the worst of the game although no scoring took place. Indeed the Thistle had very hard lines in not scoring thrice, and hemmed in their opponenets with great vigour. Early in the second round, too the home team had much the best of it, and scored a couple of goals in less than ten minutes (one of which came from a lucky shy by Marshall 15 yards away), but as the round advanced they fell off in a most unaccountable manner, and as the Rangers improved at every point, and scored a goal after losing three fine chances they drove the Thistle right up on their posts, and continued peppering away till time was called. Half a minute from the sounding of the whistle the Thistle backs and halfbacks were having it hot, and a ‘free kick’ by McIntyre sent the ball between the posts, but as it had touched no one on the way the effort went for nothing, and as matters were becoming serious for the local men, time came as a welcome relief, and gave them a victory. The Rangers kicked off, and after some good returns by the backs on either side, the Thistle men played very closely together and the forwards crowded well up and were soon in front of the Rangers posts, where a hard scrimmage ended in the ball being sent behind. After the kick out, the Rangers gathered themselves together, and McIntyre after clearing his lines sent the ball to peacock, who in company with Brand and White, transferred it in a neat dribbling run to the goal mouth, where a hot scrimmage, ensured and the lather was sent behind. Burns made a hard kick from the posts, and after some heading by Munro and Hendry; the ball was cleared away, and Suter and Johnstone had a pretty run down on the Rangers lines. Being hard pressed in the tackling; McFarlane kicked behind, and gave the home team the first corner flag kick of the game. No sooner had the ball been in play than the Partick men again invaded their opponents ground, and from a goal shy by Paul the ball was put so near the Rangers goal that their goalkeeper had barely time to chuck it over his lines to save. This gave the home men another corner flag kick, bit it came to nothing in consequence of the steady play of the Rangers backs. After time the Thistle had several close shies at the Rangers goal, and twice Nicol showed his ability in goalkeeping by saving two grand shots by catching the ball in his hands, and chucking it out – one shot, in fact by Suter being saved in a most extraordinary manner. Just as halftime was coming on the Rangers raised the siege in plucky manner, and after invading Thistle territory by smart forward play, had several close shots at the goal, but the goalkeeping of the Thistle was quite equal to that of the Rangers, and when the whistle sounded no goals were scored. The Thistle had now the kick off, but the Rangers centre forward returned the ball in a second and passing it to Brand on the left, that player got so close on the Thistle lines with the leather that the opposing backs seemed to be under the impression it had passed the goal line, and the consequence was that Thistle nearly lost a goal – the ball prevented from going under by a good piece of judicious play on the part of the goalkeeper. After the kick off the Rangers lines were closely pressed, and Hotson cleared them by a good header. After this the Thistle had the best of it for a time, and from a throw-in near the grand stand Paul got the ball in a good place, and after a few turns at dribbling passed it on to Marshall. Just as the latter was being tackled by Cameron he made a fine shot, which took effect leaving the Thistle one goal ahead. Not long after the next kick off Marshall again got up and scored a goal by a long shot, fully 15 yards away. The next kick off was followed by the Rangers having the best of it, and a couple of shots from the feet of Peacock and Brand were well saved by Burns. As it was the strangers hovered round the Thistle lines, and obtained a corner flag kick, and made it hot for goalkeeper and backs by smart runs on the part pf the whole of the forwards, who improved very much. The Rangers made another raid on the Thistle lines, and obtained a corner flag kick, but a good chance was lost by the ball being kicked behind. After the kick out, however the blues came again, and scrimmaged the ball through goal. This made the game two goals to one. The Thistle had a fast run after the next kick off, but the Rangers had little difficulty in returning the leather, and just as time was being call McIntyre from a free kick, sent the ball through, but the effort did not count in consequence of it having touched no one on the way, and amid great local enthusiasm the game was won for the Partick men by tow goals to one
