Match Trivia
This match was played at Gayfield Arbroath, and result was another of those surprise characteristics of the season, the favourite Glasgow Club being defeated by four goals to three. At the outset the strangers seemed to have the game, as they liked to take it. Ten minutes from the start Morton secured the first point of the match. Soon afterwards Gossland added a second and the spectators were scarcely aware that the play was resumed when McKenzie lowered the colours of the home club for the third time. All now seemed lost for the Arbroath, but they speedily wakened up and played with wonderful pluck. After some good runs they got the ball to the Rangers goal and put of a hot scrimmage Marshall sent it spinning through. Immediately afterwards the red jerseys again assumed the attack and Fleming by a fine long shot put no a second goal. Early in the second half – during which they put on a third halfback Crawford cleverly eluded Chalmers and amidst great excitement the scores were made level. Some fierce play was now witnessed, both sides maintaining a terrific pace; but while the Arbroath innermost line successfully withstood every onslaught, the citadel of the Rangers was after some clever passing captured for the fourth time. In the last 25 minutes the strangers made a desperate efforts to make up their leeway, but all ended in failure and the Arbroath secured a well-won victory by four goals to three. At the close the Rangers took exception to the ground alleging that the measurement across was less than the minimum width. Rangers protested and a replayed match was ordered
