Match Trivia
These two clubs have at length settled their somewhat remarkable Cup-tie and the Rangers have won by the unexpectedly heavy record of three goals to none. The Volunteers having come out of the ballot first at the drawing or the third round the event of course took place at their ground – Cathkin Park – and as an indication that the match was considered the leading one of Saturday about 5000 spectators attended despite the fact that heavy rain fell nearly all the time it lasted. The ground was very heavy and falls were frequent; but not withstanding this drawback some clever play was shown on both sides, the Rangers acting much better together all round than was the case in the previous Cup-ties. The visitors were lucky in winning the toss for choice of ends, and played with the wind at their backs for the first forty-five minutes. Kennedy set the ball in motion and made good use of his feet in the effort, but Cameron returned the leather very smartly and the younger club were soon in front of the Volunteer posts, where repeated scrimmaging occurred right in line with the posts – McKenzie having a shy which just missed the goal. After this the 3rd L.R.V. relieved the pressure a good deal by splendid back play, but their opponents crowded round and in trying to save his charge one of the backs sent the ball dangerously near the left post from which it trundled over the lines. This gave the Rangers the first corner flag kick, which was actually followed by other three before the fortress was really out of danger-a good header by Falconer saving a shot from Gossland from taking effect. A few minutes of even play followed but the strangers led by Lawrie and Gossland started a nice run and the pair by hard work succeeded in passing the backs with the ball in their possession. Gossland shot right in front of the goalkeeper, who allowed the ball to slip out of his hands. Just as Campbell was getting at it again however Lawrie came up and taking the ball away, made a clever goal, which it is needless to say was the signal for a round of cheers. Facing up again in the centre, the 3rd L.R.V. followed up cleverly and a brilliant piece of dribbling by McIntyre brought the latter so dangerously near the Rangers goal that Chalmers had to punt it away with his fists. The Rangers however actually prompted by this raid on their lines, for a beautiful run was soon made by the whole forward division and Pringle having centred the ball to Cook that young player passed the veteran half back (Kennedy), after a brief struggle and nursing the leather a little as it reached within a few feet of the touchline sent it spinning through. Halftime was now wearing on but before ends were changed the 3rd L.R.V. not only cleared their lines, but also were closing up in the Rangers goal – Chalmers having again to send out a long shot by Tait. In the second half the Rangers having the kick-off started at once into the Volunteers ground and had the ball over the lines. The 3rd L.R.V. however had little difficultly in making a clearance and for a long time completely hemmed-in the Rangers at their goalmouth. In repeated scrimmages, which occurred there the defenders, had to submit to three free kicks, but each of these although well enough taken were rendered futile by the brilliant back play of J McIntyre and Reid. Again and again did the Volunteers bring the ball up to near scoring point, but the backs and goalkeeper played with admirable pluck and good passing and even corner flag kicks on the part of the 3rd L.R.V. came to naught. Just when the home team looked like wearing their opponents out and the players could only be but moistly seen by the spectators, a grand run was started by Pringle and Morton and the latter getting a good start of the Volunteers backs astonished all who saw the game by scoring a fine goal with the wind in his teeth. For the last five minutes of the contest the Rangers men had it hot all round and when time was called McHardy just saved the goal from a corner flag kick, the match ending as we have already stated in favour of the Rangers by three goals to none. Third Lanark protested again that checking the list of eligible players there was an A Cook and not T Cook, the SFA decided in Rangers favour
