Match Trivia
The eighth match between these clubs was played on the Leamington Ground, on Tuesday afternoon when in spite of the inclement weather 1,500 spectators assembled. The rain was so heavy as to lead to the abandonment of the game just after half time. A strong wind also blew up the ground. The Rovers captain won the toss and choose to play up the incline, with the wind in the first half. Directly after the start was made a throw in by the Rovers captain, whose brother is the skipper of the opposing team, placed the ball near the Rangers goal, and Duckworth made a good attempt to score. Nichol met the ball at the corner, however and knocked it back. The Rangers forwards at once rushed down the field. Suter’s head sent back the leather when a shot was made, and it was taken to the other end and back very speedily. A miskick by Procter endangered the home goal, but Howarth saved his charge, and after some good play vy Brown, Duckworth and McIntyre. Hargreaves sent in a shot at the opposite goal which found Nichol to use his hands. Strachan returned the leather low down, and the backs and keeper failing to stop it until it had passed the line, the first goal was registered four minutes from the start. When play was resumed the Rangers attacked Howarth’s charge with great determination, but Suter, McIntyre and Procter were very active, and then Avery pounced upon the leather and gave it to Douglas, and the play was transferred to the upper end of the field. The Rangers forwards however, rushed down again, and McHardy, shot the ball into the hands of Howarth. After a brief visit to the Rangers territory, Gordon was instrumental in transferring the play to the Rovers quarter, but Gossland ended by shooting behind the goal. Brown and Avery made shots at the Rangers goal without result, and then a miskick by A Brown gave Hamilton a chance, but Howarth prevented him from turning it to account, and Suter twice cleared his lines well. A corner kick accrued to the Rangers, and after a little play Gossland shot over the bar. When twenty-four minutes play had passed a low shot by Gossland sent the through the left corner of the Rovers goal, and the score was thus equalised. After the re-starting of the ball from the centre, the ball was sent over the Rangers goal line by Strachan. Duckworth failing to reach it in time to return it to the front of the goal, and Hargreaves following with a long high shot, which sent the ball just past the further post. Gordon and Hamilton ran down the right wing with the ball and placed it in front of the Rovers goal, where a scrimmage ensured. Howarth dashed out, and with a strong blow shot the leather out. The attack was renewed, and McIntyre and Suter had plenty of work until Gossland shot the ball out past the further post. At the Rangers goal shots were made by Hargreaves and Avery and after a fruitless scrimmage in the Rovers goal, the former made a low and a high shot in quick succession, but was each time defeated. In saving his charge on the second occation, Nichol knocked the ball against the bar, and the leather went behind. The attck was speedily resumed but at half-time the score remained unchanged. On the change of ends the Rangers again became aggressive, but Suter headed back the leather, and Brown and Duckworth took it down the field. Soon afterwards Howarth caught the ball when shot in by Gossland, and after being thrown away the ball burst. A new one eas obtained, but the players were so drenched, and the rain continued to fall so heavily, that it was decided not to resume play. The match was consequently drawn with the score at one goal ach, as was the case on the 30th of October in similar weather. Last season two matches were drawn at two goal each, and in the previous season each side won a match, lost one, and drew in another, scoring six goals in the aggregate.
