Match Trivia

The above clubs played a friendly game at Kinning Park. The strangers won the toss and determined to defend the west goal. Play was commenced at about three o’clock the home team facing their opponents with ten men. As in usual at the beginning of a game play was almost continued to kicking and counter-kicking by the backs and halfbacks, but about ten minutes from the start the strangers forwards settled down to work and looked very dangerous. The leather was put over the lines by a home player and the corner was entrusted to W Gray. The kick was a beautiful one and J Gray and Rodgers took the leather and goalkeeper alike in charge. The score was challenged and the referee gave ‘no goal’ on the plea that the ball had gone through the goal without having been touched. Rodgers who hurt his knee badly had to retire making the teams numerically equal. Three or four corners now fell to the strangers who were successful in converting the last into a goal. Up to halftime nothing further of interest occurred, play being of a give-and-take nature, but neither goal being endangered. Soon after play was resumed W Gray started a splendid run from midfield finishing with a hard shot, which the goalkeeper met but couldn’t stop. The score was again disallowed on the plea that the ball had been turned round the goalpost. After the game was over the goalkeeper admitted that the ball went through, but it was for the referee and not for him to decide. Some time thereafter a foul was claimed by the home players, but play was continued till at length the leather was sent over the strangers lines about five yards on one side of the goal. The foul was still claimed by the home team and the referee who seemed to have got a little mixed decided ‘goal’. After no little difficultly and a good deal of argument matters were extricated and a free kick given to the home players. Towards the close of the game a fine passing run by the strangers resulted in a goal taken by Turner and two minutes later the home team scored their only goal in the match. The game thus ended in favour of the P.A.C. by 2 goals and 2 disputed to 1.
