Match Trivia
The above clubs met on Cathkin Park on Saturday, to play off their tie in the second drawing for the Association Cup in presence of a large number of spectators. It will be remembered that both clubs were thrown out last season by the Dumbarton Club, who beat the Rangers by a disputed goal in the second tie, and the 3rd L R V by a goal in the third tie. The 3rd winning the toss, took up their position at the lower goal, while Vallance kicked off on behalf of the Rangers. Up to half time no goals were taken, although each goal in turn was hotly invaded. After the change of ends as half time the play became very fast and exciting, continual burst of applause breaking from the spectators as each player in turn did something brilliant in the way of kicking or dribbling. The Rangers although much younger and lighter than their opponents were playing the ‘passing’ game splendidly and making some fine combined rushes into the 3rd territory, one of which resulted in their taking a goal, the final stroke being given by P Campbell amidst great excitement. Shortly before time was called the ball was fouled by one of the Rangers’ back right in front of the goal, and Mr Hunter who was entrusted with the free kick, gathering his men around him made a determined effort to force the ball through the goal with their weight, but were unsuccessful the ball being quickly sent out of danger. No more goals being taken before time was called, the match therefore was won by the Rangers buy one goal to nothing. For the 3rd the combined play of the forwards was good, Millar showing out particularly well and Watson doing good service at back; while McNeil and P Campbell making some ‘dodging’ runs together in grand style. 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers appealed against the result, which was upheld, Rangers having kicked off in both halves.
