Mateusz Zukowski (2022 to 2023)
Zukowski joined Rangers on 31st January 2022 for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £400,000.
The 20 year-old Poland under-21 Internationalist was brought to Ibrox to provide cover for captain James Tavernier following the departure of fellow right full-back Nathan Patterson earlier in the same transfer window.
A tall and physically imposing defender, Mateusz arrived from Lechia Gdańsk where he had spent several seasons playing in Poland’s top flight. He became only the second Polish footballer to represent Rangers.
Mateusz was handed his debut shortly after joining as Gers made the trip to Annan Athletic on 12th February 2022 to compete in the 5th round of the Scottish Cup. On a difficult playing surface and in horrendous weather conditions, the player appeared to acquit himself well as goals from Helander, Roofe and McCann secured a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Whilst Giovanni Van Bronckhorst’s side would go on to win the trophy for the first time in 13 years, Mateusz was barely seen again and failed to make another appearance!
Initially loaned to Lech Poznań at the start of season 2002/23, he returned to Glasgow briefly in the summer of 2023 before completing a permanent move to Ślask Wrocław. Again, the fee was undisclosed but one would suspect Rangers did not recoup their initial outlay.
The situation seemed completely bizarre at a time when many were critical of the recruitment strategy being employed by the Club
