Match Trivia
These teams met at Alexandra and played a keenly contested, through it must be aid a very fast game. The Vale had a snatch goal two minutes after the ball started, and then followed a game of varying fortune, each gaol being alternately menaced and freed by the splendid kicking of Vallance and the very admirable back play of the Leven men. At length a “hand” against the Vale of front of their goal looked dangerous, but it came to nothing, and soon the strangers goal had to be saved by McIntyre kicking over his lines from the very jaws of goal. After this, play, though continuing fast, was on the whole very fair, and the plaudits of the crowd were deservedly bestowed on many fine points occurring all round the general verdict being that finer play has rarely been witnessed. Ends being changed, a “hand” against the Vale near their own goal caused Vallance to give a well-placed kick, but the fortress was relieved. Soon however, Parlane had three goal kicks in succession, followed by a corner kick, but all with no result. During the first part of the second half play was chiefly confined to the home quarters. At one time the ball was kept dancing about in front of the Leven citadel, but Parlane was always equal to the occasion; then similar play began to be repeated at the strangers fortress. Time was now getting well advanced, and the city players seemed eager to score, when Paton made a dribbling run up to their fortress, and passing to McLeish, the latter sent it through amid great excitement. During the ten minutes that followed play became fast and furious – the utmost good temper being displayed withal – but the game ended in favour of the Vale by two goals to none
