Match Trivia
These old and formidable rivals met at Alexandria to try and settle which of them should pass into the fourth round of the Scottish Cup. Both teams were known to be evenly matched, and a splendid contest was anticipated. About 4000 witnessed the game many of these arriving from Glasgow by special train. The weather was favourable for a good exposition of the game. Both teams commenced carefully. The strangers were the first to attack, but it was short lived. The onset of the Vale was speedily made, and to many it seemed successful, but Walker had carried the ball with him on the wrong side of the post. The Rangers again retaliated when Wyllie beat Wilson with a beauty in seven minutes. This early success seemed to damp the spirits of the Vale, and their supporters for a time were comparatively quiet. It soon became evident, however that the Vale were in the game, and were determined to win. Their play was successful as Sharp with a beauty which went over the head of Reid, equalised in 15 minutes. The joy of the Levenites was great, and became unbounded when two minutes later Bruce put the Vale in the ascendancy. The home team were playing superbly, and completely collared their opponents, but were successful in getting only one other point. This was the state of affairs at half-time. The second half commenced quietly, indeed too quietly on the part of the Vale. The Rangers on the other had, were playing with rare combination and great smartness. Their clever play was rewarded with a goal in ten minutes taken by Gow. It was avery hard shot, and was only partially held by Wilson. Having bounded out of his hands it passed between the posts. For a time the Rangers continued to have the best of it, although both goals had narrow escape. Towards the close the light blues hemmed in the Vale, and must have beaten them again and again but for the goalkeeping of Wilson, which was exceptionally brilliant. When the whistle blew the home team got a great ovation, and Sharp, the halfbacks, whose play was the feature of the game, was carried in triumph from the field.
