Match Trivia
The Vale of Leven Football Club opened the season on their own ground at Alexandria by a match with the Rangers, Glasgow. The day was warm and bright, and rays of the sun proved a source of annoyance to the players. The match was witnessed by about 1000 spectators a number of whom were rather demonstrative in crying out to their favourites. The ball having been set in motion, the Rangers got possession, and by a series of passing kicks brought it well into the Vale territory, when the home team reverse matters by bringing it back notwithstanding the superior play of Vallance who by his brilliant kicking, elicited frequent outbursts of applause from the spectators. Both teams were now pressing round the Rangers goal engaged in a hot scrimmage, in the midst of which the ball slipped quietly through from a kick by Lindsay. Play being resumed the Rangers again got possession of the leather, and by a fine display of the passing game worked it near to the Leven goal, despite the attempts of the Vale team to free their citadel; Vallance who was still playing splendidly, turning every attempt of the Vale forwards. The ball was now dangerously near the goal post, and a smart shot was only saved by Wood cleverly punting it out of danger. For the next 15 minutes the Rangers pressed their opponents and had the ball confined to the enemy’s quarters. The Vale now assumed the offensive, and after a determined attack; Paton shot the ball through and scored goal No. 2. Ends being changed, the staying power of the home team was clearly demonstrated. Ferguson and Paton on the right, and Baird and McDougall on the left, running the ball up and centring repeatedly; but the back play of Rangers stood them in good stead and no result followed until Lindsay made a shot at goal, which Martin punted out, not however before the ball had passed through. The Rangers umpire protested but the referee decided in favour of the home team and goal No. 3 was scored. On this the Rangers appeared inclined to stop playing, but after a delay the match proceeded when J McIntyre being entrusted with a corner kick, sent the ball well into the mouth of the goal, when it was at once returned and he by a splendid shot sent it spinning through a piece of play that was deservedly applauded. After this, the Rangers seldom crossed the neutral line and the Vale team had a string of good shots, some of which struck the crossbar, but no further result followed, the ending in favour of the home team by four goals to none
