Match Trivia
Replay. This undecided Cup-tie was played off at Alexandra, in presence of about 4000 spectators, under very unfavourable circumstances as regards the weather. A drizzling rain falling all the time, rendering it unpleasant for the onlookers and unsure for the players. The Rangers won the toss and McLintock kicked off against the wind. After some neutral play in mid-field, the Rangers got well into the Vale quarters when a hand against the strangers brought the game to the other end of the field, and after several attempts by the forwards of both teams Campbell started a fine run and centred the ball well into goal, when Parlane got hold of it between his knees until a gap was viable amongst the Rangers, and cleverly threw it out. His goal was saved only by sharp work. The corner kick was sent out and JC Baird took up the running until he was stopped by Gillespie after a capital display of football in which the back play of the home team was conspicuous. A hand was given against the Rangers about a dozen yards in front of their goal, and the ball was placed by McLintock to Ferguson who headed it through amid applause. The Rangers followed the kick off, and by clever passing worked the ball up the Vale goal when Ferguson and McFarlane got possession and came away in fine style, passing every opposition, but shot the ball over the crossbar. The Vale backs managed to keep the Rangers in check despite every effort of Campbell who was playing splendidly for his team. At last he escaped McLintock, but shot wide, the ball going harmlessly past. JC Baird and McDougall got well on the ball, and by a series of clever manoeuvres got within range when Baird shot, but Watt was there and threw the ball out. McLintock sprang forward and returned it; when it was headed backforwards until Ferguson popped it through amidst considerable excitement. Ferguson and McFarlane again came up on the right wing and Watt’s hands were once more called into requisition. P Campbell dodged the Vale backs and sent the ball into the centre, where Jamieson headed it over to McGregor who in turn passed to JC Baird and McDougall, the latter running it up until Vallance sent it flying back, thus enabling his forwards to make a very serious assault on the Vale citadel, which Parlane saved by sending the ball over his lines. The corner kick was well placed, but the Vale backs could not be eluded and the ball came out of the midst, and was soon in the midst of a hot scrimmage in front of the Rangers goal when it was sent past. A hand against the Vale gave Vallance an opportunity of sending the ball well into the Vale goal, but McPherson returned it, and the play was transferred to mid-field and latterly to the front of the Rangers goal, when time was called. Play being resumed, the Rangers by clever passing and the efforts of Vallance kept the Vale in check for a time, but they would not be denied, and after a sharp attack the Rangers goal fell from a shot from McDougall. The Vale now fairly hemmed the Rangers in. Several sorties by Campbell were repelled by McLintock and McIntyre. For the Rangers Vallance, McIntyre and Gillespie played splendidly in defence of their goal, but could not get the ball away. Watt threw it out, Jamieson sent it back to him; out again by Watt, back once more and this time through by McFarlane. The Rangers were now playing a losing game, and the forwards with the exception of P Campbell had less activity. The ball was sent into touch near the corner-flag, and the throw-in was followed up by the home team and sent through for the fifth time. Up to the end of time the play was almost confined to the strangers ground but no further scoring too place, the game ending in favour of the Vale by fives goals to none. This unexpected result was for the most part obtained by the exceptionally good play of the Vale forwards, who passed most unselfishly
