Match Trivia
The meeting on Saturday at Alexandria between the above clubs ended in a win for the Rangers by 6 goals to 1. When the close and exciting matches, which have taken, place in past seasons between these clubs are borne in mind, Saturdays exhibition at least on the part of the home team, was disappointing. Certainly the day was too hot for football, and the rays of a broiling sun soon told on the players; but it was quite evident that in the present Vale men the stamina and enduring powers possessed by their predecessors is sadly awaiting. The opening minutes of the game were sensational enough, the Rangers quickly scoring a couple of goals, before the Vale had properly settled down. A show of resistance for some 15 minutes followed on the part of the home team, but again the Light Blues took one of their surprise runs, and silently stole another goal from their opponents. The only successful bit of play for the Vale followed this, when Dan Bruce running up the ball passed to Paton, who notched the only point for the Vale. A good chance for a ‘penalty’ kick was given to the ground team, but Bruce kicked the ball over the bar much to the chagrin of the Vale supporters. In the next half of the game the Rangers took, other 3 goals from the Vale. In the winning teams McPherson and Kerr were prominent for brilliant play, while Mitchell among a good trio of halfbacks was decidedly useful. The Vale tried three, second eleven men in their front ranks. D Paton showed himself a hard working players and a good shot. The other two – MacFarlane and Logan – may come to be useful men, but the team as a whole still require improvement.
