Match Trivia
The first meeting between these two clubs for over a year took place on the ground of the former at Kinning Park, in presence of between 2000 and 3000 spectators. The ground was in capital order, and the play on the whole was excellent. The Rangers kicked off, and no sooner had the ball been sent back again than their ground was besieged by the Queen’s Park forwards. After some excellent passing by the senior team, a combined rush was made past the Rangers backs, and in the scrimmage the leather was sent between the post by McNeil. On again facing the Queen’s Park the Rangers kept their own for a time, the back play of Vallance and McIntyre being grand; but they could not prevent repeated long shots, from the feet of McNeil, Spencer and McKinnon from flying over the bar in dangerous proximity to goal. The defence, however, was so good that several corner kicks by Davidson were cleared away in splendid style by Gillespie and the backs. As half time was called P Campbell made a capital run down on the Queen’s Park goal, but he was tackled by their captain in the nick of time, before any of his club could come to his assistance. On the change of ends the Rangers, now with a slight wind in their favour made it hot for their seniors, coming well up on goal, but Ker and Thomson never perhaps played better, and none of the Rangers could get near enough to score. After this the Queen’s Park had a fine run down to the Rangers goal, but just as Lamberton was “nursing” the ball for a good shot M McNeil tackled him, and the latter accompanied by Steel, made a slashing run right up to the Queen’s Park goal, and caused Anderson to use his hands in throwing out the ball. Nor was this all the Rangers had the best of a subsequent scrimmage, and again caused the young backs of the senior club some anxiety. About five or six minutes before time was called, however the Queen’s Park gathered themselves together, and made a fierce attack upon their opponents goal, a shot by Lamberton going over the bar. The game thus ended in favour of the Queen’s Park by one goal to none. For the Queen’s Park Thomson, Richmond, Campbell and McNeil were in form; and on the other side T Vallance, M McNeil, P Campbell and Gillespie played best
