Match Trivia

Weather of the worst description favoured this return League match at Cathkin Park last night, and consequently the attendance was a meagre one. The Cup holders played their usual team, excepting Turnbull vice Miller, and Glen at centre-half in place of McCreadie. The home team had out a new centre forward in Banks of Everton, while Johnstone of Sunderland essayed outside left. Clark had another trial with Beveridge on the right wing, and McCue of Cambuslang Hibs, figured at centre-half. The home team took advantage of the wind and rain in the opening half, and soon were down at the Rangers goal where a lengthy stay showed Dickie in the best of form. The Rangers made many attempts to get away, but cut their passing too fine and their halves being weak, the Third were not long away. Clever play by Clark and Beveridge resulted in a corner, from which the Third scored, and quickly added a second goal. The Rangers spurted, and from a foul Hyslop opened their register with a fine shot. At this the interval was called. The elements moderated greatly in the second half, but the Third continued to have the best of it. Clark walked round Drummond and Johnstone simply made rings round Gibson, with the result that a third goal came from the foot of Peddie. The Rangers wakened up and Hyslop shot a beauty of a goal. McPherson equalised but was gibe off side. The Cathkin forwards were in rare form, and had settled down in earnest style, Clark scoring a fourth, to which Rangers replied with a third goal taken by Gibson. Play continued even and fast, both goals having narrow escapes. The 3rd Lanark eventually won by four goals to three. The best team undoubtedly won, the 3rd Lanark all round being strong and well balanced, while the failures of the Rangers side were as many as their success. The home forward line was perfection Banks proving a splendid pivot to excellent wing in Clark and Beveridge and Johnstone and Peddie. McCue the makings of a capable centre half, slow meantime but judicious. McFarlane did his work well and was ably supported by Barr and Gardner, the latter showing a rare turn of speed on catching up the Rangers forwards. Low was almost a passenger, but Hyslop was in rare form, especially at shooting. Turnbull fed his partners well, but is palpably slowing forward of practice in first-class games. Mitchell was the best of the Rangers halves, the others being out of it. Gibson could make nothing of Johnstone. Drummond tarnished his reputation and Smith had all the work to do, which he did in splendid fashion. Dickie kept goal in his best form.
