Match Trivia
This arrangement came off on the ground of the Volunteers, Cathkin Park, and contrary to general expectations ended in the sweeping victory of six goals to none in favour of the Rangers, who played a rattling good game all through. The weather was very cold and this no doubt had the effect of reducing the attendance compared with the previous meetings of the same clubs, and certainly not much over 500 spectators were present. The ground was both hard and slippery but a good start was made shortly after the advertised time by the 3rd L.R.V. kicking off from the north goal. A few minutes of even play followed, but eventually the visitors got away and when one of the forwards was nearing the 3rd L.R.V. goal the ball was kicked over the lines by the defenders. This gave Rangers a corner flag kick, taken by Gossland. From the scrimmage, which followed Peacock, sent the ball under. In three minutes after McKenzie from the right wing scored a second goal for the Rangers, and followed by another immediately on the ball being sent off from midfield. The ‘Warriors’ rallying after a bit took the ball to the Rangers end and Scobie headed it over the bar. The Rangers had all the best of the play in the first half and not till five minutes from time did the 3rd L.R.V. seriously endanger their goal when from a free kick before goal they claimed a score, but were only allowed another free kick right on the goal line of the Rangers, but without advantage. Marshall and Tait were the only forwards of the 3rd playing in anything like form, and McKenzie and Gossland worked hardest for the Rangers. The second half was a repetition of the first so far as scoring was concerned, as inside ten minutes the Rangers added other three goals to their score. The first was made by McKenzie eight minutes after the start, the second by Peacock and the third by McKenzie – in all six goals. After this however the play was more open and the 3rd by long kicking kept the play more at the Rangers end and twice the ball bounded off the bar. They had several corner flag kicks besides, but failed to score. The Rangers made several raids and had a hard shot at goal, but no addition was made to the score. The last quarter of the game was played in semi-darkness. Marshall and Tait played best for the Volunteers who did not play nearly so well together as we have send them. McKenzie and Gossland were the best of the Rangers forwards and McIntyre and McHardy of the backs.
