Match Trivia

First Replay. Played at Cathkin Park before 6,000 spectators. The ground was to the heavy side, and the front of each goal had to be treated with sawdust. The Third were the first to appear, and were received with cheers and bugle calls at least as loud and long as those which greeted the Light Blues a minute later. Third Lanark won the toss and played with the wind, Hamilton kicked off. Aided by a/free kick the Cathkin right had a corner, which was easily cleared, and in a fine burst away Hamilton pulled up by first Barr, and then the referee. The Light Blues however were not to be denied, and Hamilton had hard lines in heading past. The Third right pair and Simpson were playing finely, and four minutes from the start Johnstone headed through from a fine cross by Gillespie amidst loud cheers. The game was livelier now, and at the other end Miller hot the post with a magnificent shot. The Third were at the other end in a jiffy, but Smith shot past, and a fine piece of work on the part of Miller and Hamilton ended in the latter equalising ten minutes from the start. The Cathkin forwards played harder after the reverse, and thrice had close things in the vicinity of Dickie. The game was of the liveliest, they’re being little to choose so far, between the forwards, but in front of goal Ibrox had a slight pull, and thrice Milne had to fist away from Smith. Gillespie trickily beat Drummond, and Dickie had to save from Johnstone’s disposal of the cross-shot. Johnstone got on again and placing with fine judgment enabled Gillespie to score a second goal. Milne nearly mulled a low shot, and then for bringing up Smith rather vigorously, Drummond was pulled up. Nothing came of the free kick, and go-ahead halfback work on the Ibrox side transferred play to the Cathkin end. A misunderstanding between the Third halves let the Ibrox five away, but Gardner intervened, and at the other end Neil spoiled some fine work initiated by Gillespie. A Smith had a corner off Barr, from which Miller had hard lines in not scoring, and then Gillespie was instrumental in carrying the game midfield again. Crawford was winded, and the game was stopped for a minute or two, Gillespie being run out from the throw-up. Barr kept Smith off Milne at the expense of a corner, from which McCue cleared nicely hut luckily, and a minute later Milne ran out to kick away from Hamilton. Play rules slacker, the heavy ground telling on the men. Smith (Third Lanark) was pulled up for offside, but the advantage from the free kick was short-lived, and Beveridge from well out shot past. For tripping Neil, Hannah was penalised but nothing better than the free kick came, and then Johnstone was pulled up for a similar treatment of an opponent. Alex Smith was brought down within the penalty lines, and the referee gave a penalty kick. But Neil when he might have equalised, sent high over the bar. At the interval the score was – Third Lanark 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal. Third restarted, and from a free kick the Ibrox brigade were dangerous. Miller had a corner off Gardner from which Neil shot pass, and from the kick out the Cathkin right got down on Drummond. Slacker play in the open ruled for a time. Two free kicks for infringements, which most referees would not notice, helped the Rangers, and from the second McPherson almost equalised. Play got livelier again, and Hannah was pulled up for rough work with McPherson. From the free kick Neil almost gave Miller the chance he was looking for, but the ball went behind. A beautiful header by Hannah was finely saved by Dickie, and Drummond kicked away a fine try by Johnstone. A breakaway on the Rangers right was stopped at the expense of a free kick. Which rather many were going, and Milne saved finely from Miller with three men on him. The Third forwards got away again, but the rally was short lived, and Hyslop shot past. Smith gave Milne a hot one to clear, which he did in no indifferent fashion, and then Smith (Third) got clear away, and with a chance in a thousand to increase the Cathkin score, shot right into Dickie’s hands. Ibrox came again and Miller not too nicely placed, shot over. The Rangers were doing all the pressing now, but the Cathkin defence was very sound and very lucky. A free kick for tripping against Hannah was easily cleared. Mitchell shot past, and then a second penalty kick came the way of Ibrox. Gardner pulled the feet from Miller. It was badly taken, and Milne saved. The game as unsteadied now, but for a little ruled in favour of the Warriors, who were helped by a free kick. Two of the same description came the way of the Rangers, but score they could not. Drummond stopped a breakaway by the Third right wing, and Mitchell shot past. Barr twice beat A Smith and Hyslop, and then Dickie kicked away a fine shot of Gillespie’s. Rangers came away, and with only ten minutes to go, A Smith equalised amid loud cheers. Cathkin were by no means done with, and at the other end two corners were forced by Johnstone’s wing. The Ibrox defence withstood the attack, and then aided by a free kick, the forwards got well away. Three times the Warriors made fine attempts to get away, but Drummond was surer now, and kept them out. Towards the close the Rangers pressed, and had a corner, which was sent behind. The result of a hard game was a draw – 2 goals each.
