Match Trivia

At Cathkin Park last night these teams met in a match for the benefit of James Simpson the ex-Third Lanark player. There was a fair attendance, and the weather was excellent. Losing the toss the Rangers kicked off, and were at once down on Raeside. The home defence however satisfactorily deal with the attack, and the next minute Johnstone and Lean were at the other end. Thus early play was very equal and there was nothing to chose between the respective elevens. The Rangers were however the first to open the scoring a success for which Lennie was responsible. For the moment the Third were disorganised, but they soon railed, and Dickie assisted by Drummond was somewhat fortunate in effecting a clearance. Rangers were persistent, and Robertson combining his wings well was frequently in front of Raeside. A grand opening was taken full advantage of by Stark, who beat the Third’s goalkeeper with a well-judged oblique shot. As the half proceeded the Rangers gradually began to assume the upper hand, and the breakaways of the home quintet were spasmodic. Halftime – Rangers 2 goals: Third Lanark 0. The second half had just been started when the Third Lanark opened the scoring, as the result of a beautiful run along the right wing. Taylor had the honour of finishing, and the ball banged past Dickie at express speed. The Rangers were not long in adding to the score. Some pretty work by Walker and Lennie brought the ball in front of Raeside, where the centre half shot into the net. Ten minutes later Walker, with a lightning shot made the total four. The Light Blue forwards were combining well, and a fifth goal was added by Lennie. Before the call of time the elevens each secured an additional goal that of the Third Lanark being scored from a penalty. Result – Rangers 6 goals: Third Lanark 2 goals
