Match Trivia
Although the Rangers won the match at Cathkin Park very easily so far as goals were concerned the usual play was by no means of a one-sided character. The 3rd Lanark for fully half the game looked as if they could about win and even when goals were being rapidly scored against them they showed admirable pluck and determination. The forwards however failed to do their duty at goal, and Dickie on the whole was not seriously disturbed. The only goal put on in the first half was the result of a penalty kick given against Robertson of the Rangers, and taken by Barr, although a few minutes after the start Lynn had nobody to beat but Dickie, but his shot went wide. It was a chance in a thousand and ought to have been utilised. Early in the second half Alex Smith finished a beautiful run by slipping the ball into the far corner of the net, and a few minutes later Graham gave his side the lead from a foul kicked by Robertson. Hamilton soon added a third goal, and later on after a brilliant single-handed effort beat Raeside for the fourth time. The Rangers were vastly superior in attack, Smith and Hamilton being particularly clever and effective. Young Cross made a very fair shape at centre-forward for the Third, and was unfortunate to find Neil in one of his best moods. At half-back the Rangers were also the better Neil and Robertson, but especially the former putting in some very telling work. Simpson tried hard to hold Smith and Speedie, but the task was obviously too much for him. McQue spoiled his play by coming too often under the ban of the referee, and Smith was not as successful as he usually is. At back however, the Third had the pull, Barr and Turner (of the Black Watch) making fewer mistakes than Smith and Crawford, and kicking with greater accuracy and strength. Barr gave another splendid exhibition of all round back play, and is undoubtedly in exceptionally fine form at the present time. No fault could be found with the goalkeeping on either side. The only regrettable feature of the match was the display of ill feeling which somehow showed itself in the second half when fouls were frequently given against players in both teams, who as a rule do not stoop to rough and unfair tactics.
